Here at JLEW we’re looking for new ways to make New York weekends feel fresh and new as summer travel winds down. Here are some fun ways to spend these dog days, especially for the health-minded Gutsy Girl who likes to stay active while having a good time.

Dance to the rhythm

You still have time to grab Beyonce tickets for September (!) but why wait until then to dance up a sweat? Check out a capoeira class or performance . . . the music alone is enough to pump you up, but when you learn this playful dance is actually a martial art that develops strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, rhythm, agility, reflexes and endurance, we think you #GirlsWithGuts will fall in love.

Work out your brain

Head to the New York Hall of Science to try the Sports Challenge exhibit. You can test your skills at different activities like balance, climbing, and pitching, but the most fascinating parts of the space are the stations that teach the different scientific principles behind some of our favorite sports.

Exercise outside of your comfort zone

Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean you can’t mix up your exercise routine during a staycation weekend. Take a few days off from your regular gym or fitness class and try something new. Here are a few ideas, depending on how willing to stray from the norm you are:
– Gutsy: Take a hike! If you’re looking for a low-impact adventure, nothing beats some fresh air and a view. Visit any of these nearby trails, all available by public transit.
– Gutsier: Kayak around the island! There are several places where you can kayak for free and see the city from a whole new vantage point. It’s also a great way to cool off from the sweltering city heat.
– Gutsiest: Try to fly! Get some air while you learn the ropes, er, trapeze, at Trapeze School NY or take an aerial yoga class.

Bring your own air-popped popcorn and dark chocolate for a movie snack that’s both delicious and healthy!
